New Year's Eve, Thursday 31 December

Party of 7, in Del Valle Norte, with a private rooftop at the house.

The rooftop at midnight is now in question. Casa KM was booked on 18 October and its confirmation lists quiet hours from 22:00 to 08:00, which the listing's rules summary never showed. Midnight on the roof on 31 December falls inside that window, and the property has exterior security cameras. Everything below still assumes the roof, so it is all provisional until Manuel confirms in writing. That request is on the to do list. If the answer is no, the potluck pickup run still works indoors, but the midnight plan needs a different venue.

What makes this night different

Reforma closes in both directions, along with Florencia, Rio Tiber and Rio Rhin. The free Reforma party runs 18:00 to 02:00 and draws about 250,000 people. The Zocalo is dark, the city confirmed no programming.

Cars will not move. And midnight is provisionally planned on the Casa KM rooftop, subject to the quiet hours above, which means a restaurant dinner forces a choice between leaving early and missing midnight.

That reframes the whole decision: the best plan is the one that does not require leaving the house.

The three approaches, priced

All prices per person.

Each Effort Risk
Potluck pickup run $31 to $69 High, all before 5 PM Pre-order deadlines
Private chef $69 plus holiday premium None Quote and availability
St. Regis gala $324 Travel through the closure ring Sells out, and you miss your own rooftop. Worth more of a look if the roof is refused.

Recommended: the potluck pickup run

Every New Year's Eve pickup window in Mexico City is 13:00 to 17:00. That is not coincidence. The cena happens at home and the city shuts down to go do it, so a restaurant selling you dinner that day wants you gone by five.

So the plan is not "everyone wanders out at 7 and brings something back." Nothing will be open. It is "everyone collects a pre-ordered dish between 1 and 5, then you eat on your own schedule."

Morning: Mercado Medellin

Campeche 101, Roma Sur. About a ten minute walk, and it is on the map. Open 08:00 to 19:00, and the fondas at the back run hardest from noon to 15:00. Cheese, charcuterie, pan, produce, and Peruvian, Colombian and Venezuelan stalls. 31 December morning is the busiest market day of the Mexican year, which makes going one of the more authentic things available that day.

Afternoon: the pickups

Angelopolitano, Puebla 371, Roma Norte. Walkable.

Package Feeds Price Each
Light dinner 4 MX$1,390 $20
Dinner 4 MX$3,090 $45
Deluxe dinner 6 MX$3,600 $35
By the kilo MX$240 to 1,700

Pickup 13:00 to 17:00 on 24 and 31 December. Order 48 hours ahead, by phone.

Madereros, Calle Gral. Antonio Leon 72, San Miguel Chapultepec. MX$900 each, about $53 per person, same 13:00 to 17:00 window, order by 29 December, via Instagram @madereros.mx.

Price caveat: the source for both is the 2023 holiday cycle. The structure is stable year to year, the prices are not. Add thirty or forty percent for inflation, and the 2026 menus will not publish until late November.

The four things that will break it

  1. Pre-order deadlines land around 28 to 29 December. Somebody owns this a week out. Walking up on the 31st gets nothing.
  2. Order food that reheats. Braises, moles, roasts, pasta, rice. Not tacos, not anything fried. The house has a full kitchen so reheating is easy, but the menu has to cooperate.
  3. There is no improvising after 7 PM. Of the restaurants open on a normal menu, only Macelleria is in Roma Norte and it closes at 19:00. If a pickup falls through at 4:30, that is the whole dinner.
  4. Small taquerias close 31 December without announcing it. Nobody's assignment should be a neighborhood stand.

Restaurants open 31 December on a regular menu

The entire published list for the city:

Restaurant Where Hours
Macelleria Roma Norte 09:00 to 19:00
Azur Anzures 06:30 to 23:00
Cascabel Santa Fe 13:00 to 18:00
Fiorella Satelite 13:00 to 02:00
Parrilla Paraiso Tlalpan 20:30 to 01:00

One place in the neighborhood, shutting at seven. Rappi, Uber Eats and Didi all run, but restaurant coverage thins badly and couriers get scarce late inside the closure ring. Delivery is the 2 AM backup, not the dinner.

Fallback: private chef

Take a Chef has 1,121 chefs in Mexico City. Request the date and party, chefs send menu proposals, you pick. Settles in about two days of messages, everything agreed in writing before committing.

Guests Per person
2 MX$1,788
3 to 6 MX$1,436
7 to 12 MX$1,177
13+ MX$1,150

That is about $69 each. All-inclusive: the chef comes to the house, sources and buys every ingredient, cooks, runs full table service, and cleans the kitchen. Not included: tableware, glassware, drinks.

31 December can be requested. Their own wording is that prices move with the season and December books first, so expect a premium. Even at double it lands near $138 each.

Other platforms worth quoting against it: Cozymeal, miummium, Silvia Private Chef.

Four questions to ask the chef

  1. The exact 31 December surcharge, in writing.
  2. Arrival and departure times, and whether they stay through dessert or leave before midnight. For this night that is the detail that decides it.
  3. Whether they bring tableware and glassware for 8, or we rent.
  4. Cancellation terms, since this gets booked before the headcount deposit lands.

Taquiza has a hard floor

A taquero at the house would suit a rooftop party perfectly and the rate is only MX$115 to MX$200 a head, about $7 to $12 each. But most Mexico City providers set a 50 person minimum. At 8 you either pay a renegotiated rate or get turned down. Worth one phone call, not worth planning around.

The galas, for reference

Venue Each Notes
St. Regis MX$5,500, $324 20:00 to 01:00. The only one with a published per-head price.
Cityzen MX$24,000 / 46,000 / 66,000 per table Priced per table, not per head. 38th floor, top tier seats 6, so confirm an 8 top.
Four Seasons Il Becco unpublished Private terrace plus Fifty Mils after party, 23:00 to 03:30
Chambao MX$4,140, $244 Polanco, four courses, excludes drinks
Garum MX$2,300, $135 Polanco, six courses

Nostos runs a la carte with no minimum consumption and extended hours on 31 December, which makes it the least painful restaurant option if the group wants to go out.

One conflict: Maximo Bistrot does a four course Eduardo Garcia dinner on 31 December, and Maximo is also a candidate for the 2 January birthday dinner. Pick one night, not both.

Why not the gala

Once the 2023 potluck prices are inflated, the potluck is not meaningfully cheaper than the chef. So choose between those two on experience, not money. The potluck is more fun and it fills the one genuinely blank slot in the Mexico City itinerary, because 31 December daytime currently reads "keep it light, nothing that runs late," which is a polite way of saying nobody had an idea.

The gala is the option that is clearly bad value, and it is also the thing gating the lodging decision.
